State Street is seeking to hire a Chief Information Officer (CIO) to provide leadership for technology across the main areas of the company including investment management, investment research and trading, investment servicing and data & analytics. This key leader will ensure the protection and enhancement of core product lines and establish an innovative technology strategy and delivery capability consistent with the companys vision and growth objectives. The CIO will be expected to drive innovation throughout the organization with technology as the key to all activities in the bank, this is a critical and important role for the firm. This leader will be a crucial business partner to the other executives at State Street and will act as a liaison to the Audit Committee Chair of the Board.

Reporting to and partnering with the Chief Operating Officer, the CIO will work closely with State Street's executive management team to understand business drivers, market requirements and competitive issues facing the organization and translate those into a comprehensive technology strategy for both new and legacy products. The CIO will drive the technology roadmap and delivery of innovative products and solutions while protecting and enhancing the current platform and product portfolio in a 24x7 "failure is not an option" environment. This person will grow and enhance the technology team in terms of key technologies including cloud, Agile, DevOps, data, security and engineering. The CIO will also have the commercial acumen to build and strengthen alliances and partnerships with appropriate third-party vendors to continue to enhance and position State Streets products and services as market leaders.

The technology team will be a critical enabler of State Streets growth and success with responsibility for both internal as well as external products and services. The CIO function is responsible for the reliability of the core legacy applications in terms of confidentiality, integrity and availability while creating a movement towards services-oriented approach as well as a continued migration to the cloud.

The position will be located in Boston, Massachusetts.


  • Chair the firms Technology and Operations Committee with Lou Maiuri.
  • Provide leadership to the company to build a flexible, innovative and modern technology organization that is exceptionally customer oriented, delivers business value and is well respected both within and without State Street.
  • Partner with the senior management team to develop strategic and innovative solutions to solve complex business issues. Employ technology to execute the business strategy and continue to influence and gain buy-in from senior business partners.
  • Recruit, motivate, develop and retain a high-performance technology team. Build multiple successors and a team that meets the business needs of State Street in terms of technical skills and experience.
  • Develop and maintain an appropriate organizational structure that supports the needs of the business.
  • Develop a seamless service delivery platform appropriately tailored for new and legacy applications with a focus on technology optimization, integrity, availability and reliability.
  • Lead the technology organization to a greater focus on innovation and decreased time to market for new products and services. Embrace new technologies and approaches while maintaining appropriate focus on risk management.
  • Lead strategic and operational planning to achieve business goals by fostering innovation, prioritizing technology initiatives, and coordinating the evaluation, deployment, and management of current and future products across the organization. Position the technology platform and products as a key engine for growth.
  • Approve, prioritize, and control projects and the project portfolio as they relate to the selection, acquisition, development, and installation of new technologies.
  • Anticipate key marketplace trends, opportunities and vulnerabilities and present them appropriately to senior management.
  • Serve as a true peer to other members of the senior management team, capable of contributing to the business strategy and operations of the firm at the same level as other senior functional executives.
  • Establish and demonstrate high standards regarding ethics and performance. Hold self and the organization accountable against these standards


  • Move the organization to a nimbler, simpler and more customer-oriented set of technology platforms.
  • Integrate the global technology function with its business partners, both from a cultural and delivery perspective. Adopt a fully agile approach to product development, engineering and deployment through co-led development efforts.
  • Rebalance State Streets technology resourcing model to a pragmatic mix of internal build and external vendor provision of services such that the model delivers sustainable value and efficiency while retaining the flexibility to remain nimble in the markets State Street operates in.
  • Delivery of improved efficiency and resiliency metrics for the global technology function.
  • Position technology at State Street as a trusted business partner and enabler, and a destination of choice for top talent wishing to have impact at scale.
