The Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics in Dresden, Germany, is an international research institute focused on cell and developmental biology. Currently about 500 employees are working at the institute, where half are from abroad with 53 nations represented. MPI-CBG has twice been awarded the title “Best Place to Work” (Academia and postdocs) by the journal “The Scientist”.

We are offering the position of Head of Finance (m/f/x).

The Head of Finance is a senior position in the management of the institute and is responsible for the overall management of the MPI-CBG's finances, income, and expenditures. MPI-CBG is an institute of the renowned Max Planck Society conducting ground-breaking biomedical research at the forefront of the current state of the art. The institute has an international staff coming from > 50 nations from around the world. The institute has won several prizes for its family-friendly culture and for creating an optimal work environment.

As Head of Finance, you shall oversee a budget of approximately 35 million euros in institutional funding, third-party funds, and own revenues. You shall help develop and continuously improve management information to assist the Institute’s leadership team and budget holders. Key aspects of the role will be to manage the financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, reporting across the institute, and correct accounting of all revenues and expenditures.

Main responsibilities include:

  • provide advice and guidance regarding institute’s financial strategy to the leadership team
  • efficient and effective transaction processing and oversight of accounts receivable and payable
  • ensuring compliance with Max Planck and German public audit standards
  • provide senior level support and guidance to ensure compliance with financial regulations and procedures
  • apply appropriate internal controls to ensure accuracy, reliability, and security of institute assets and personnel records
  • serve as a financial controller to ensure bookkeeping, accounting, grant management, and bank statements are regularly reconciled
  • oversee a total digital transformation of finances and associated transactions in coordination with the Max Planck Society headquarters
  • lead a sustainable and effective team by providing management, development, and guidance to staff
  • serve as financial controller in the preparation of the annual financial statements, quarterly forecasts, middle and long-term financial plans, and customized monthly financial reports for the institute leadership as well as budget reports for research group leaders
  • ensure ongoing sustainability and continuous improvement of scientific services and facilities by establishing, monitoring, and reporting a tracking and billing system, as well as cost and performance evaluation
  • serve as the main contact person for MPG headquarter’s financial office, auditors, tax authority, and banks

The Head of Finance reports directly to the Head of Administration (HoA) and typically serves as the HoA’s representative when the HoA is on vacation or absent.

Your qualifications

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience, recognized accountancy qualification, experience in working in a finance department of a comparable size, profound knowledge of accounting standards, sound office IT skills, advance knowledge of Microsoft Excel, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and experience in developing and leading staff; this would include excellent staff supervisory and team work skills, with the ability to motivate staff to achieve deadlines and high standards.

The position would suit a hard-working, self-motivated, and reliable person able to work to strict deadlines and take responsibility for their own workload. Good interpersonal skills and a “can do” attitude is essential as there will be frequent contact with customers, sponsors, and institute staff. Experience in working with Microsoft Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Word is essential as the work is mainly computer-based. Previous experience of enterprise accounting systems, preferably SAP, is essential, and significant experience in and knowledge of German public sector financial procedures would be desirable. As the institute’s official language is English and the working language of the administration is German, fluency in German and English is necessary.

Our offer

The position is available immediately. The initial contract is for 2 years with the possibility to become unlimited thereafter. Salary will depend on the qualification and experience of the candidate. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled.
