Our client is a renowned commodity trading MNC. It is now looking to hire an experienced and senior Trade and Structured Trade Finance Manager. This role will report to the Marketing Treasurer.

As the Trade and Structured Trade Finance Manager, you are responsible for the management of trade finance activities in support of sales and purchases and managing associated risks and impact on working capital for the Marketing BU and its impact on the Group balance sheet. This role includes the identification, training and negotiation of margin-enhancing financing opportunities using the trade finance toolkit and the exploration and development of structured trade finance capabilities. You are tasked to make the best financing and risk management decisions working with sales people, traders, customers, suppliers, risk-investors and various internal stakeholders within the Marketing BU. This role will manage a team of professionals covering trade finance and STF.

 

TYPICAL TASKS

Trade Finance:

  • Development of the trade finance banking strategy, ensuring best pricing and coverage of trade finance services to support the expanding global reach of the Marketing BU.
  • Lead negotiations with banking partners to arrange vanilla trade finance facilities (letters of credit, bonds, guarantees, receivable discounting) and accountable for obtaining best available price and service for letter of credit issuance, advising, confirmation, negotiation and discounting activities. Coordination amongst legal, credit, sales teams, banks and insurers to ensure optimal pricing and terms in line with internal governance and risk framework
  • Run competitive request-for-pricing processes when required for these products with large groups of banks, covering global scope of Marketing
  • Development of the receivables finance strategy for Marketing, ensuring best pricing and coverage for the discounting of invoices for credit risk and working capital purposes and advancement of profit-enhancing opportunities using this tool.
  • Determine balance sheet and funding effectiveness of inventory financing transactions such as repos and intermediation, seeking opportunities to monetise equity and traded stockpiles and optimising the Group balance sheet.
  • Investigation into the effectiveness and subsequent arrangement of new supply chain financing facilities for extended payment terms for Marketing.
  • Relationship management with third parties across the globe: banks (30+), general and specialist trade credit and performance risk insurers, commodity traders; developing strategic or tactical relationships with new parties as required
  • Provide strategic and tactical operational support and guidance to sales operations and commercial on daily trade finance operations by providing guidelines and framework, as well as directly troubleshooting complex transactions
  • Management and development of the Trade Finance Analyst to support day to day pricing, credit lines, confirmation service and operational trouble-shooting requirements of this area.
  • Provide leadership as well as subject matter expertise to Group IM for the systems development necessary to manage the operations of receivables and supply chain finance.

 

Structured Trade Finance:

  • Champion and promote innovative financing structures enabling incremental profits, in close coordination with sales and trading teams and support functions. Explore the development of these transactions and other innovative structured trade finance capability, developing a business case and the creation of a profit-centre in the future
  • Supports sourcing and origination activities by taking the lead in financial negotiations and marketing efforts with banks and convincing risk investors to achieve partnerships on medium to high risk complex 3rd party  mining projects, providing specialised advice to physical traders.
  • Review of financial models and statements of 3rd party miners, working alongside Credit Risk, to suggest risk mitigants and advise on financial covenants to be included in structured prepayments.
  • Development of the bank and other financial counterparty strategy in this area, including relationship management with: banks , specialised credit insurers, commodity traders, develop strategic or tactical relationships with new parties as required

 

Others:

  • Manages bank and other financial counterparty exposures arising from trade and structured trade finance activities in accordance with the principles and limits defined by Group Treasury Policy.
  • Understands the Group debt structure and interlinkage of Group companies and how debt terms may impact around the Group. Obtains sign-off from Group Treasury when required for new debt-like instruments.
  • Escalates and collaborates with Group Treasury colleagues accordingly.
  • Market watch and internal support/guidance of relevant fintech solutions in the trade and structured trade finance area
  • Prepare any necessary reporting or budgeting in trade and structured trade finance area
  • Identify process improvements and system-related efficiency opportunities related to trade and structured trade finance products
  • Facilitate KYC and administration of trade and structured trade finance products

 

Knowledge:

  • Strong understanding of cross-border commodity financing in a trading environment, with a focus on trade and structured trade finance products – holistic understanding of key related credit/performance risk, financial analysis, legal, tax and accounting concepts and interdependencies.
  • Advanced Treasury background: deep understanding of corporate lending techniques, cash management, FX and experience in identifying and managing impact and linkage to other financing arrangements across a multinational corporation (covenants, representations, credit rating)
  • Generic understanding of Bank’s regulations, capital model, credit reviews and compliance
  • Generic understanding and knowledge of the mining and metals market in terms of key participants and dynamics across Anglo American products.

 

Skills required for role:

  • Excellent academic credentials in Business or Finance, ideally Bachelor degree.
  • Min 12+ years in total, including min 5years of structured trade finance exp gained with a global commodity trading firm, or a bank (dealing with commodity clients).
  • Advanced communications and presentation skills, ability to represent the company with senior external parties and develop new relationships for the benefit of the business
  • Lead the negotiation of complex structured and trade finance or debt facilities, related to commodities
  • Experience of setting up the STF back office function is beneficial but not a must
  • Results oriented, capable of holding self and others to account on delivery
  • Collaborative, with the ability to seek and understand the perspective of multiple stakeholders, and successfully influence / challenge the opinions of colleagues and senior managers, obtaining buy-in for collective projects
  • Constructively engage stakeholders to a common cause through developing mutually beneficial solutions and proposals
