A Citi MD who managed the bank's risk exposure to hedge funds & private equity disappeared

When you have gone dark

Summer is upon us and people who sat in their seats during the colder months are deciding to get some fresh air. They include Viral Shah, a managing director (MD) in Citi's financial risk management team.

Shah didn't respond to a request to comment and Citi declined to comment but it is understood that he has disappeared. It is not clear where he is going to, but there are suggestions that he may have opted for a smaller institution with more responsibility.

Shah joined Citi from Barclays in 2020. He was global head of financial risk management for the alternatives space at the bank and covered Citi's exposure to hedge funds, private equity, family offices and crypto. It was a large and complex role.

It's not clear who will replace Shah. With banks' exposure to hedge funds and private capital firms increasing, profiles like his are in high demand.
