Stripe building new Gen AI assistant with graduates on $270k salaries
Payments fintech giant Stripe is no stranger to LLMs; founder John Collison confirmed that Stripe was using them back in 2023, and said Stripe was expanding their rollout. It's now hiring a group of graduate engineers to help it do so, and recent job listings suggest it has made progress in the development of a generative AI assistant.

In a recent job opening for a new grad PhD machine learning engineer, Stripe said its applied machine learning team is offering multiple graduate roles in 2025. They're advertised as hybrid roles in its San Francisco headquarters, with applicants able to earn up to $270k in salary alone. Applicants are expected to have graduated between Winter 2024 and Summer 2025.
The applied machine learning team says its projects include "the Stripe Assistant and the Stripe Foundation Model." The foundation model was first announced last April; Collison said at the time that Stripe is "using LLMs, transformers, and deep neural networks to optimize every part of Stripe." Stripe Assistant, meanwhile, appears to be a new invention that isn't mentioned anywhere else on its site, but may be an expansion on Radar Assistant, an NLP-powered assistant for its fraud prevention product, Radar. The job listing says Stripe's foundation model is used for "dozens of tasks" including "fraud detection, enhanced support, and predicting user behavior."
The team is also offering internships to PhD students in San Francisco, New York and Seattle. These roles provide a base pay of up to $13.5k per month.
Stripe's applied ML team is led by Sachin Bansal, formerly of Apple and Google. At the latter, Bansal created the machine learning centre of excellence for Google Ads. Other senior figures include Gautam Kedia, formerly Lyft's head of applied machine learning, who joined Stripe back in 2020.
It's not just the AI team that Stripe is hiring PhD graduates for. It says in a seperate graduate listing that it's hiring "a variety of data scientists to partner with the product, finance, payments, risk, growth and go-to-market teams." These roles, based in either Chicago or Toronto, can earn up to $216.5k in salary.
