Institutional Banking Technology builds and runs the technology, data and AI platforms that support CBA's Global Institutional Banking business, serving Australia's largest corporate, institutional and government clients, as well as the teams who support them.

Our technology enables customer acquisition, onboarding and relationship management, client money movement, institutional product pricing and origination, trade and working capital transactions, and ongoing product and customer management.

As Chief Engineer, you will work horizontally across four portfolios', each led by a Crew Tech Lead: Institutional Lending, Pricing & ESG, Trade Finance, Digital Sales Excellence, and Digital Service Excellence.

What you'll be doing

Reporting to the General Manager - Institutional Banking Technology, you'll be accountable for the long-term technical direction and health of critical platforms, systems and services.

You'll do this by:

• Leading the technology roadmap, architectural design and long-term health of critical platforms, systems and services.
• Understanding our customers and products and how technology can deliver great outcomes.
• Leading modernisation across legacy and future-state platforms, including cloud, APIs, microservices and service-domain aligned architecture.
• Raising engineering standards and measurable outcomes across secure design, delivery, observability, reliability, resilience, developer experience and production readiness.
• Partnering with product, architecture, risk and delivery leaders to make pragmatic technical decisions that balance speed, quality, customer outcomes and operational risk.
• Championing AI-enabled engineering and emerging technologies to improve colleague and customer experiences.
• Creating clarity, confidence and momentum for engineering teams by setting strong guardrails, mentoring others and building an inclusive engineering culture.

We're interested in hearing from people who:

Are deeply technical, hands-on engineering leaders who have operated across large-scale, complex technology environments. You'll bring strong architectural judgement, modern engineering experience and the ability to influence across product, risk, architecture and delivery to create safe, scalable and customer-focused outcomes.

• Bring experience in modernising complex platforms, including legacy transition, service domains, APIs, cloud, architectures.
• Are experienced in the role that AI, GenAI and agentic platforms can play in improving colleague and customer experiences.
• Vendor/SaaS integration experience.
• Build engineering excellence across secure design, CI/CD, observability, reliability, controls and operational risk.
• Work comfortably across strategy and hands-on technical detail, with the willingness to contribute to code and architecture, while setting an example of what great code, patterns and architecture look like.
• Create a culture focused on accelerating the adoption of new and emerging technologies.
• Establishing new ways of working, successfully advocating for new technology approaches, and have the experience to understand the architectural integration of new software solutions.
• Care about mentoring others, building capability and creating an inclusive engineering culture.
