SMBC swoops on OCBC director

Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC) in Singapore has hired Jeng-Ming Hwang as a director, specialising in project finance.

Hwang has moved to the Japanese bank following an 18-month stint at OCBC in a director-level role focused on originating, structuring and executing project finance and acquisition finance transactions, with a “strong sustainability focus”, according to LinkedIn.

The Stanford University graduate worked for DBS from 2013 to 2021, latterly as a VP, covering renewables across East Asia.

SMBC describes structured and project finance as a “core business” globally. It is also reportedly strengthening the unit in Singapore. SMBC’s APAC portfolio focuses on sustainable energy, infrastructure and natural resources.

In April, SMBC transferred Tomofumi Watanabe from Tokyo to Singapore as co-head of APAC structured finance.

Luca Tonello, a managing director who heads up the energy and infrastructure business of SMBC in Asia Pacific, is also based in Singapore and works alongside Watanabe.
