A junior partner at electronic trading firm G-Research left for an AI lab
Much fuss has been made of the quant researchers and traders leaving for major AI labs like Anthropic and OpenAI, but there are plenty of younger, growing AI labs providing an equally enticing exit opportunity. One such lab is BeyondMath, which provides the first foundational AI model "trained on the fundamental laws of physics." It just hired a junior partner at one of the UK's most prominent electronic trading firms.

Jeremy Mardon joined BeyondMath as a senior AI researcher after a decade working at G-Research. He worked as a senior machine learning quant, and was promoted to associate partner at the start of last year. He joined BeyondMath shortly after the arrival of its head of AI, Carlo Fisicaro, who was previously CTO of biotech firm Peptone. BeyondMath was founded by ex-eBay directors Darren Garvey and Alan Patterson, the latter of which also worked on building Barclays' FX trading platform earlier in his career.
Mardon was a theoretical physicist prior to joining G-Research, so his new gig is a bit of a comeback. He studied at Oxford, completed a theoretical particle physics PhD at Berkeley, before spending five years as a postdoctoral researcher at Stanford. There, his focus was on the detection and mathematical modelling of dark matter.
Maybe quants leaving for smaller labs will become the trend. Hudson River Trading's head of AI, Iain Dunning, told Bloomberg in June that AI labs pose less of a threat to them in the talent market because they've "become big tech" and shifted their culture as a result of their massive headcount growth. BeyondMath is a different story; when it raised its seed funding round earlier this year, it had just 16 people.
