Deutsche Bank hired an introverted German MD from US boutique Moelis & Co

US investment bank Moelis & Co was one of multiple boutiques that expanded into Germany during the 2010s but the region appears to have gradually lost its lustre. The bank's co-heads of Germany left the bank in 2019 as control of the region was handed back to London and headcount has remained conservative there since. Now, one of Moelis' most senior German bankers has moved on.

Sebastian Schmitz, a Frankfurt-based managing director (MD) in M&A and capital markets at Moelis, has joined Deutsche Bank's technology investment banking team. He spent the last nine years at Moelis, joining in 2016 from German boutique investment bank Freitag & Co. He was promoted to MD in 2022, according to a video he filmed earlier this year with China Europe International Business School (CEIBS), where he got his MBA.

In the video, Schmitz professed that he was an introvert, and espoused the benefits of having a "mentor who invests into your career." There don't appear to be many mentors at Moelis in Germany right now though; we couldn't see any other German MDs currently working at the bank.

There are multiple executive directors (EDs), though, including SocGen alumnus Stefan Gockeln and Goldman Sachs alum Yannick Wünkhaus. They appear to be fairly junior as far as EDs go, however; Wünkhaus left Goldman Sachs as an associate and joined Moelis as an ED, with just a one year stint at manufacturing firm Klöckner Pentaplast in between.

Deutsche Bank declined to comment. Moelis did not respond to a request for comment.
