Deutsche Bank rehired a banker as a vice chairman. He left two years later for Santander

Generally, when you bring back a former employee and sing their praises in an internal memo, you expect them to stick around for more than a few years. Deutsche Bank may, therefore, be sad to see the back of Simon Leopold, whom it rehired just two years ago, as he leaves for Santander.

Leopold joined the Spanish bank in New York last week according to FINRA's BrokerCheck tool. His LinkedIn states that his new role is head of US real estate investment banking, succeeding Steffen Doyle who departed the bank in December. Doyle was one of many Credit Suisse MDs that Santander hired after the Swiss bank collapsed; although Santander's corporate and investment bank became much more profitable after their arrival, insiders told us around the time that these new colleagues weren't universally popular.

At Deutsche Bank, Leopold spent the last two years as vice chairman of the bank's real estate, gaming, lodging and leisure group. He spent 12 more years at the bank in his first stint, leaving as an MD in 2011. Since leaving, he became an MD at UBS and chief financial officer at a four different firms. Prior to rejoining Deutsche Bank, he was CFO of retail real estate firm Washington Prime Group.

In a 2024 memo seen by Bloomberg, Reza Akhavi and Andrew Bartrop, co-heads of Deutsche Bank's real estate group, said Leopold "has developed deep, high-quality relationships" across the real estate space since he first left. Those relationships may soon follow him to Santander.
