Point72 hired another Goldman Sachs partner as a technology executive

As we've noted in the past, Point72 has a love for Goldman Sachs technologists rivalled only, perhaps, by Citadel. Steve Cohen's hedge fund hired Goldman partner Ilya Gaysinskiy to be its CTO in 2024 and has just hired another partner for another executive role.

Faisal Shamsee announced via LinkedIn that he is joining Point72 as its chief infrastructure engineering office, based in Singapore. He was most recently the firm's co-head of Singapore, and held several senior engineering roles including head of core engineering for Asia Pacific. Shamsee spent 25 years at Goldman, working as a systems administrator early in his career before rising to partner in 2022. We first reported on his departure from Goldman in April, at which point his next destination was unclear.

Goldman people are proliferating at Point72. Last year, it hired several of the bank's former 'tech fellows' (its most technically capable individuals), including Rahul Garde, Point72's head of platform infrastructure. Shamsee, however, appears to be the first Goldman partner to join the hedge fund since Gaysinskiy. Other notable Goldman alumni at the fund include Michael Fisher, an ex-strat MD who joined as chief risk officer in 2024.

Citadel was arguably the more popular destination for Goldman's top technologists in recent years. Ken Griffin's hedge fund hired Goldman CTO Umesh Subramanian to be its own CTO in 2018, then hired his replacement, Atte Lahtiranta, in 2024. Subramanian left Citadel earlier this year and his replacement, rather than another Goldmanite, was Amazon VP Matt Taddy, who joined last month.
